Location: Kranevo, Bulgaria

Distance to district city: 30 km.

Sightseeing nearby: Aladzha Monastery, Balchik Palace, Botanic Garden, Kaliakra

Location: A nice little village situated in a sheltered bay, Kranevo is 25km north of the city of Varna. It lies just beyond the northern end of Golden Sands and at the southern part of a long beach, which extends towards the luxurious resort of Albena to the north. The vast beach, clean sea, gently sloping sea bottom and curative mineral water have propelled the swift growth of the village into a competitive tourist destination.

History: Kranevo has succeeded an ancient Roman stronghold, known as 'Ekrene' or the harbour 'Kraneia'. Traces of the Roman fortress, which was exploited during the Middle Ages as well, have been found on the southern plateaus above the village.

Places of Interest: Relatively close to Kranevo is the famous Aladzha rock monastery. The monastery is situated only a few kilometers south of the Zlatni Pyasatsi (Golden Sands) resorts and is also a part of the Zlatni Pyasatsi natural park. The distance to Varna is 16 km. The monk's cells, common rooms and sanctuaries, dug directly into the limestone rock and situated on two levels high above the ground, were connected via an external staircase. According to some historians, primitive monks' cells were built and inhabited already in the 4th century AC.

On the opposite direction are located the town of Balchik, former ancient Greek colony, later a Greek-Byzantine fortress. Under the Ottoman Empire, the town came to be known with its present name. After the liberation of Bulgaria, Balchik developed as centre of a rich agricultural region and later, as a major tourist destination with the beachfront resort of Albena to its south. Balchik is known by its beautiful palace and Botanic Garden. The Botanic Garden of Balchik lies in the heart of the town, which in turn is situated 31km north of Varna in a beatiful inlet. The Romanian Queen Maria built a summer palace and a botanical garden there. This happened 8 years after the end of World War I in 1918, when Balchik was annexed to the territory of Romania.

Kaliakra is a beautiful cape close to the Romanian border. The cape stretches 2km deep into the sea and consists of 60-70m-high limestone rocks, the inaccessibility of which has been the main reason for the construction of an ancient fortress named Tirisis there.

Catering: Similarly to other small villages and towns, Kranevo has seen a swift expansion of the tourism industry in the past few years, particularly as regards restaurant service and accommodation capacity. There are plenty of low and average-class pubs, traditional and fast-food restaurants.

Transport: The main coastal road passes through the eastern outskirts of Kranevo. One can well rely on the regular Varna-Albena and Varna-Balchik bus lines, which also stop by in the village of Kranevo.
